Aucun homme n’est une île, tout entier à lui-même; tout homme est une pièce du continent, une fraction de l’ensemble; si une motte de terre est par l’océan emportée, l’Europe en est amoindrie, comme si les flots avaient un promontoire, le manoir d’un ami, ou le tien arrachés; la mort de tout homme me diminue, car je suis engagé dans l’humanité; ne demande donc jamais pour qui sonne le glas; il sonne pour toi.
